The Institute for Computer Science and Control (SZTAKI), founded in 1964 as the member of the state-owned chain of institutions, has nearly 300 full-time employees including about 80 with Ph.D. The Institute gained world-wide reputation in computer science, systems- and control theory, engineering and business intelligence, machine perception and human-computer interaction.
We apply our results for vehicle industry and transport, production informatics and logistics, energy and sustainable development, security and surveillance, Big Data analytics, networks, distributed computing and the Future Internet. The institute is Centre of Excellence in Information Technology, Computer Science and Control of the European Union since 2001. As the first institute from the Central Eastern European region, ERCIM (European Research Consortium of Informatics and Mathematics) granted full membership to SZTAKI in 1994. Since 2010, SZTAKI hosts the Fraunhofer-SZTAKI Project Centre for Production Management and Informatics (PMI).
In 2018, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and SZTAKI established a common firm, the EPIC InnoLabs Nonprofit Ltd., in order to transfer the R&D&I results to the industry. Our research infrastructure includes laboratories for 3D Internet, control of robotic devices and UAVs, Smart Factory and Cloud Computing under the unifying theme of Cyber-Physical Systems.

CO-VERSATILE H2020 emergency program project to combat COVID (2020-2024)
Led by SZTAKI, a 21-member EU project will be launched to make European production systems and supply chains more flexible. The goal is to help the shift production to medical devices if a pandemic or a further wave of COVID-19 makes it necessary. The project aims to enhance the versatility of the European manufacturing industry, with a particular focus on vital medical devices and protective equipment. By this project, the production capacities can be changed within 48 hours if an extremely large amount of medical equipment or protective equipment is required. Another goal is to create a so-called Digital Technopole, and this way the developments and solutions can be shared with other manufacturers all over Europe. The project leader is Dr. Róbert Lovas, Deputy Director of SZTAKI.
We built data stream-oriented analytics tools that reduce the complexity, cost, and burden associated with jointly supporting analytics for both “data at rest” and “data in motion.” The project is in collaboration with Portugal Telecom, Rovio (FI, the maker of the Angry Birds games) and Internet Memory Research Paris as industrial research centers. As joint innovation with AlticeLabs (Portugal Telecom research), our IPTV Recommender with Flink and together with DFKI and RISE SICS, our Enhanced Apache Flink Platform are included in European Commission's Innovation Radar.
We established the Centre of Excellence in Production Informatics and Control (EPIC CoE) as a leading, internationally acknowledged focus point in the field of cyber-physical production systems. The main goals of the EPIC CoE are, one the one hand, to upgrade this scientific centre of excellence, and on the other hand, to strengthen the ability of SZTAKI and the two faculties of BME to transfer the research results to the industry with the support of the participating FhG institutions, with other words to enhance the applied research and innovation potential in the field of cyber-physical systems in Hungary, with international influence, especially in the CEE region.
EPIC CoE is constituted and run through the cooperation of the Institute for Computer Science and Control (SZTAKI), two faculties of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and four institutions of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG) under the coordination of the National Innovation Office (NKFIH), Hungary. The mission of EPIC CoE - as a leading-edge knowledge centre of cyber-physical production systems - is to accelerate innovation, realize industrial solutions, train new generations of highly qualified professionals and support the development of a sustainable and competitive European manufacturing ecosystem.
